What Does An Avocado Face Mask Do

An avocado face mask not only feels amazing but brings a bevy of benefits to the skin. Packed with vitamins and nutrients, it's no wonder we have a lot of love for avocados.

Whether you go with an avocado mask from a trusted skincare brand or whip up one for yourself, you can see from the list below the many ways avocado can boost your beauty ritual.

1. Moisturizes dry skin

An avocado face mask brings so much moisture to dry and depleted skin. The natural oils and other nutrients hydrate and nourish all skin types.

Avocados are a good source of biotin, which is known to protect the skin from excessive dryness when applied topically. Biotin hydrates skin cells and improves the overall appearance of your skin tone. It may even help prevent some skin rashes and keep dry skin from cracking.

Avocados are rich in omega-3 fatty acids as well. These make a major difference when you need to moisturize.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids help fight dry and itchy skin. These are symptoms you'll often see with skin ailments like atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Consuming healthy fats in foods or applying them topically in DIY face masks can make a major difference, even if you have sensitive skin.

As a reminder, there are a few different categories of moisturizers: humectants, emollients, and occlusives.

Humectants attract moisture to the top layer of our skin. Emollients smooth the skin as they fill in gaps between skin cells with oils and lipids. Occlusives are generally a bit heavier than emollients, so while emollients help the skin maintain some moisture, the occlusives sit on top of the surface and seal it in.

Avocados and their oil can bring emollient and occlusive benefits, making it one of the best body oils out there. Avocado face masks will generally have additional moisturizing ingredients, including hydrating humectants like glycerin, and softening emollients with occlusive properties such as shea butter and olive oil.

2. Protects against signs of premature aging

You may already be familiar with the many health benefits of avocados. It's one of those healthy ingredients that work wonders whether you mash it up for a face mask, include it in an anti-aging hand cream, or include it in a salad.

For now, we're focusing on avocado face mask benefits.

There's a melange of minerals, fatty acids, and more in this amazing face-friendly fruit. In addition to biotin, avocados also contain vitamins A, C, E, and K, which help heal the skin while making it softer and smoother.

Vitamin E, C, and A protect your skin from free radical damage caused by sun exposure and other environmental factors. Over time, oxidative stress to the skin will result in wrinkles, dark spots, and even more serious skin damage, so you should welcome any help you can get.

Knowing these nutrition facts, it's not so surprising that an avocado face mask can reduce premature aging signs, and using such a face mask is a sure sign of smart skin care.

These aforementioned essential fatty acids present in avocado face masks can also improve skin elasticity. You'll see suppleness and a bit more bounce-back to the skin if you find a face mask that features avocado.

These good fats found in avocados also relieve inflammation. Inflamed and irritated skin means a whole host of issues that cause aggravation and lead to early signs of aging. If you can address the source, it makes your regular skincare routine that much more successful.

Having the antioxidant action of lutein and zeaxanthin, an avocado face mask will minimize wrinkles and improve elasticity. Frequent application of such a face mask may even help protect your skin from future damage.

There's some research to indicate that the polyhydroxylated fatty alcohols (PFA) found in avocados can partially heal the damage resulting from ultraviolet radiation.

Even though you should soak up that good news, you still want to be careful before soaking up too much sun.

3. Helps you get soft and glowing skin

At JUARA, we're inspired by the ancient Indonesian healing tradition called Jamu. It's an artful, natural, and holistic approach to beauty and wellness.

Your overall wellness relies on conscious self-care and taking time to fulfill the needs that relate to mental, spiritual, and physical health. What goes on your skin is as important as what you put in your body.

Traditional Indonesian beauty rituals and recipes often rely on avocados to provide nourishment (whether in a face mask or a meal). As we've mentioned, the amazing avocado is rich in antioxidants, minerals, and nutrients that help nourish the body and give you glowing skin.

An avocado face mask can brighten skin with its ample antioxidants like vitamin C, which is often used in skincare products to promote glowing skin. And even though it's technically a face mask, it may also add to the strength and resilience of your hair.

If you'd like to reap the benefits of an avocado face mask, but don't want to make an avocado face mask by yourself, we happen to have a serendipitous solution.

The JUARA Java Plum Avocado Nourishing Mask delivers deep hydration, smoothes rough spots, and makes skin more supple. In other words, it goes above and beyond what you're likely to mash up for yourself.

This face mask has humectants - which were mentioned earlier - that help moisturize the top layer of skin, as well as emollients and occlusives that soften the surface and prevent water loss, respectively. This avocado face mask combines avocado oil, java plum, banana, mango, and more.

We already know what avocado brings to the table, so let's touch briefly on the others. Java plum provides calming and soothing relief for the skin. The mango helps restore moisture that's been lost and protects skin for the future.

Such a bountiful botanical mix makes this face mask great for getting the glowing skin of your dreams. The essential fatty acids, antioxidant-packed vitamins, and age-delaying polyphenol figure prominently in perfecting the complexion. Plus, this face mask makes your skin feel fabulous.

Avocado face mask benefits include glowing skin and health benefits for any skin type

When your skin feels dry or dehydrated, do yourself a favor and smooth on the Java Plum Avocado Nourishing Mask. It's great for evening use since the skin absorbs all the nutrients throughout the night, and you don't even have to rinse it off like you would a homemade avocado face mask.

This face mask is suitable for dry and dehydrated skin types. With repeated use, the unique formula helps to restore the skin's natural moisture barrier.

4. Strengthens your skin barrier

The skin barrier is located in the uppermost layer of your epidermis, the stratum corneum. It protects the skin from many unwanted environmental elements and irritants while helping to maintain healthy moisture levels.

The stratum corneum - or skin barrier - is often described as a brick wall, with the skin cells (corneocytes in this case) being the bricks, and the lipids (like cholesterol and ceramides) as the mortar. Together they form a protective barrier.

The fatty acid profile of the avocado means more protection for your skin. In particular, omega-3 fatty acids appear to enhance skin barrier function. They help seal in moisture and keep out irritants, which are the primary job responsibilities of your skin barrier.

Omega-3 fatty acids inhibit an enzyme which produces certain hormones that spark inflammation. By minimizing swelling, these essential fatty acids help the skin barrier do its job that much better.

An avocado face mask will obviously have all the goodness that an avocado has to offer, and there are generally other ingredients that support the skin barrier. For example, there's this DIY recipe for an avocado face mask that also has honey, lemon juice, coconut oil, and rolled oats.

Honey addresses a variety of skin concerns including acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It also helps with hydration, healing, and reducing inflammation.

Bursting with antioxidant-packed citric acid, lemons protect the skin and work as a brightening agent. Coconut oil complements the moisturizing effects of this avocado face mask.

In this recipe, rolled oats (ground oats) are optional, but they can contribute anti-inflammatory properties to soothe and calm the skin. Essential oils like lavender will extend that calming effect.

Wash face with lukewarm water or warm water then apply honey avocado face mask

To make this mask, simply put all the ingredients below in a food processor or a blender and mix until smooth:

1 tablespoon rolled oats, coarsely ground

1/2 ripe avocado

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon raw honey (manuka honey is especially nice)

1 teaspoon coconut oil

2 drops of lavender essential oil

Before applying the mask, wash your face with warm water and then pat dry. Now you can apply your homemade avocado face mask all over your face and neck. Let it sit for 20 minutes before rinsing the mask off.

5. Clears up blemishes

We generally feel a bit better about ourselves when we can control acne breakouts and help bring about beautiful skin.

As we mentioned above, avocado contains biotin. In addition to addressing dry skin problems, it can also aid in keeping your complexion clear and healthy. Specifically, biotin may improve comedonal acne, which is the kind that causes blackheads and whiteheads.

There's also some indication biotin could help control the flaking that happens when retinoids are taken for acne.

The same can be said for all those antioxidants that help fight against environmental irritants and provide general protection for the skin. And because avocado also has anti-inflammatory effects, it can help reduce the redness associated with acne.

If you're looking for homemade avocado face mask recipes that reduce acne and redness, try one with yogurt. Yogurt has lactic acid that can gently slough off dead skin cells to reveal a younger and brighter-looking complexion. Sometimes acne is worsened when dirt, dead cells, and sebum clog pores, so yogurt's an ideal ingredient.

Yogurt also locks in moisture and potentially evens out skin tone.

This next homemade avocado face mask recipe is similar to the one that was shared above, but with a few important differences. The recipe is formulated for those with more oily skin, or those who are prone to breakouts

This avocado face mask recipe has yogurt (rather than coconut oil) and tea tree oil (instead of lavender oil). Tea tree oil has antimicrobial properties that can keep acne-causing bacteria at bay.

All you need to do for this face mask is get a small bowl where you combine the mashed avocado and plain yogurt. Then add in the tea tree oil which you've diluted in water beforehand, as the recipe requires.

½ a medium ripe avocado

1-2 drops of pure tea tree oil diluted in 100 ml water

2 tablespoons of plain yogurt

Apply the mask to your face, leave it on for 15 minutes, and then wash it off.

Wash with lukewarm water and be sure to rinse any leftover mask off well

Face masks with avocado can improve the tone and texture of your skin, making it more soft and supple. You can enhance your overall appearance and get that glowing skin you seek.

If you want to make an avocado face mask for glowing skin with all-natural ingredients, try this recipe. It has apple cider vinegar which is great for clarifying purposes and putting the kibosh on blemishes.

The oats help exfoliate dead cells and clear the way for fresher skin.

For the ingredients, you'll need:

1/2 tablespoon finely ground oats

1/4 cup avocado

1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon honey

1 teaspoon coconut oil

1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

To prepare this recipe, add the oats to a food processor and mix until they are all ground. Move oats to a medium bowl. Add the avocado, lemon, honey, coconut oil, and vinegar. Mash with a fork until smooth.

As with the other face masks, apply it to a washed (but dry) face, and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Since this recipe has oats, you can gently scrub as you rinse the mask off.

(Not quite like an exfoliating scrub, but with similar benefits!)

This is a great recipe for addressing dark spots, as the avocado and lemon can both have a brightening effect.
